🔬TODAY’S BREAKTHROUGH

A clinical trial in heart surgery patients reveals quercetin supplementation significantly reduces vascular senescence and post-operative inflammation in men, but not women, highlighting sex-differences in senolytic responsiveness.

The Discovery:

Ninety-seven coronary artery disease patients (78 men) received either 500 mg quercetin or placebo twice daily, beginning two days before bypass surgery and continuing until hospital discharge. In male patients, quercetin reduced markers of vascular senescence, improved endothelial relaxation, and cut post-op atrial fibrillation incidence from 18% to 4%.

The Science:

  • Quercetin targets senescent endothelial cells, reducing expression of senescence genes and inflammatory proteins

  • Endothelium-dependent dilation improved significantly in men (p = 0.043), not in women (p = 0.852)

  • Postoperative atrial fibrillation dropped from 18% (placebo) to 4% (quercetin) in male patients (p = 0.033)

  • Transcriptomic analysis of artery samples revealed quercetin reversed inflammaging pathways in male vascular cells, but triggered them in female cells

Your Action:

Men with cardiovascular risk may consider short-term quercetin supplementation (under medical guidance), especially around surgeries.

Avoid assuming benefits for women until more targeted data is available.

Support your vascular health with anti-inflammatory foods, regular exercise, and endothelial-supportive nutrients like omega‑3s and polyphenols.

Bottom Line:

In men with coronary artery disease, quercetin reduced vascular aging and post-op heart rhythm complications, but had no benefit in women, underscoring the need for sex-specific longevity strategies.
