🔬TODAY’S BREAKTHROUGH
A new study has decoded the role of a key protein in intrinsic skin aging. Researchers found that this single protein, Kininogen-1 (KNG1), simultaneously controls the three major pathways of dermal decline, making it a powerful new target for rejuvenation.
The Discovery:
Through sophisticated proteomic-sequencing analysis on mouse and human skin, scientists identified that the protein KNG1 is highly upregulated with age. The study demonstrated that overexpression of KNG1 directly reduces dermal thickness, degrades collagen and elastic fibers, and increases overall oxidative stress, driving the visible phenotype of skin aging.
The Science:
KNG1 serves as an intrinsic biomarker, with expression levels significantly elevated in aged skin samples from both mice and humans.
KNG1 promotes the degradation of collagen fibers via the activation of two key enzymes, MMP1 and MMP9.
It regulates the breakdown of elastic fibers through the membrane metallo-endopeptidase (MME) pathway, causing skin to lose its resilience.
The protein elevates systemic oxidative stress in the skin by modulating the enzyme EPHX2, compounding age-related cellular damage.
Your Action:
The study highlights that KNG1 downregulation is a promising future strategy. Since KNG1 drives inflammation and oxidative stress, support your dermal health by consuming a diet rich in antioxidants. Consult a dermatologist about interventions that enhance your skin's natural defense against internal degradation.
Bottom Line:
The protein KNG1 is an intrinsic master regulator of skin aging, controlling collagen loss, elastic fiber breakdown, and oxidative stress.
