🔬TODAY’S BREAKTHROUGH
Fresh key lime essential oil may help slow skin aging by protecting collagen and elastin, two proteins critical for skin strength and elasticity.
The Discovery:
Researchers found that fresh Citrus aurantifolia (key lime) essential oil strongly inhibits the enzymes collagenase and elastase, which break down skin structure. Compared to dried lime oil, the fresh oil retained more active compounds and showed greater antioxidant capacity. This makes it a promising natural ingredient for anti-aging skincare formulations.
The Science:
Fresh oil inhibited collagenase and elastase with IC50 values close to standard drugs, outperforming dried oil.
Antioxidant activity was significantly higher in fresh oil (37.76 µM TE/g) vs. dried oil (27.76 µM TE/g).
Compounds like α-terpineol, 4-terpinenol, β-pinene, and D-limonene were abundant in fresh oil and contributed to strong radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory activity.
Molecular docking and dynamics confirmed stable binding of β-pinene and limonene to elastase and collagenase, supporting their anti-aging mechanism.
Your Action:
Look for skincare products formulated with fresh citrus essential oils, which preserve more bioactive compounds. At home, add more citrus (like lime and lemon) to your diet for their natural antioxidants.
Bottom Line:
Fresh key lime essential oil shows real potential as a natural anti-aging ingredient for future skincare.
